Wellington softballThe Wellington softball team lost 11-8 and 7-6 at Worden Park. The Crusaders still have a makeup date in Valley Center before completing the season.In game one Wellington allowed six runs in the top of the third and could not recover, despite getting four runs in the bottom of the seventh.Andover had 14 hits to Wellington’s nine.Ryleigh Buck was 2-of-4 and had three RBIs for Wellington.In game two, Andover opened with a 5-1 lead and added two more runs in the top of the second to lead 7-1. But Wellington chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the second and one in the third.Then in the bottom of the seventh down 7-4, Bailey DeJarnett reached base on a fielders choice. Erin Goodrum then doubled and McKenna Oathout singled to load the bases. Madi Adams and Taylor Zimmerman walked DeJarnett and Goodrum home to make it 7-6. But a put-out at first ended the game.Wellington is now 7-11 for the season.Buck was 2 of 3 with two runs, three stolen bases, a double and a triple. Andover, a Class 5A team which is now 12-6, cranked out 14 hits and committed no errors in game one. Wellington sole run came in the bottom of the first when Connor Burden batted in Connor Phelps which made it 2-1 Andover after one inning.The Crusaders managed five hits to Andover’s 14. Wellington committed one run.Jalen Macias was the losing pitcher in all six innings pitched. He allowed 14 hits, two walks while striking out five. His ERA for the game is 10.5.In game two, Wellington was much more competitive but still lost 7-2. Wellington had six hits including two from Andrew Horn, who smacked a triple. Trevor Nance and Jaden Hines both had RBIs in the game.Andover opened with a 1-0 lead and led 4-0 in the top of the third, before Wellington scored its first run in the bottom of the third.  Andover was in front 7-0 after six.Jerrod Huck started the game and was relieved by Wesley Gilmore in the second inning. Gilmore gave up seven hits and four walks, but struck out two.Wellington now prepares for regional competition (see related story). Wellington golf teamChance Russell and Graysen DeJarnett made all league at the AV-CTL DIV tournament held at the Winfield Quail Ridge golf course Tuesday. Chance Russell finished with an 85, shooting a 42 on the front and 43 on the back.Graysen DeJarnett placed ninth with an 86, scoring a 46 on the front and 40 on the back.Wellington finished with a cumulative 389 for the day placing it fourth.Joe Friesen shot a 102 and Carson Legrand had a 116 to round out the team scoring. The top four individuals’ scores make up the team score. Shane Hughes shot a 120 and Aareon Mason had a 139 as the other two golfers.Wellington will now set its sights on regional play at the Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield on Monday, May 19. Schools competing include: Andale, Andover-Central, Augusta, Clearwater, El Dorado, Mulvane, Rose Hill, Circle, Wellington, Wichita Trinity and Winfield. Top two teams at each regional and the next five lowest individual scores that are not members of a qualifying team will advance to the Class 4A State tournament at Mayetta-Firekeeper Golf Course on Tuesday, May 27.
