Powered by Firework Arathi Arun, the powerlifter who made India proud in the Asian Powerlifting Championship 2019 held in Hong Kong by winning a gold medal, has done it again as she secured a total of five golds in the ongoing 2019 Commonwealth Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships hosted in Canada.Advertisement Image Courtesy: ANICompeting in the 72 kg M1 category, Arathi is one of the 28 powerlifters participated in the tournament, from various countries such as England, Wales, Sri Lanka, Australia ahnd the hosts Canada. The championship lasted from September 15th to 21st.Arathi, who hails from Chennai, spoke to Ani: “I am the only woman who has taken part in both Asian platform and Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship. It is a very proud thing for me.”Advertisement A dentist by profession, and also a mother of two, Arathi said that she did not receive the honour she expected on return.“After winning, I expected a lot of appreciation and support but I was not appreciated and was not given much support. So, that is a letting down, as a sportsperson, at the end of the day when you come back to your motherland, you expect appreciation, you expect your people to love you and respect you for what you have done for the country.” she lamented.Advertisement However, Arathi told that it will not curb her spirit, as she wants to continue thriving for glory.“I will not stop; the fire in me is not going to stop. I am going to take part in the World Championship that is going to come in South Africa but if I am getting support from the government that will be an added bonus to me and I will really appreciate it,” she added.
