Summary Nexen has confirmed one person has died and another is in critical condition after an explosion at its Long Lake oilsands facility south of Fort McMurray. Alberta Energy Regulator spokesperson Karrie Rosa said the blast happened Friday afternoon around 3:20 p.m.“Nexen is in the process of shutting down the facility, which is expected to take a little while, and they’ve established an emergency response centre at the Long Lake facility,” Rosa said. “We’ll be working with the company to ensure all safety and environmental requirements are met during the response to the incident.”Pam Sharpe, Occupational Health and Safety spokesperson, said a stop work order has been issued, and OHS is investigating.“It appears the workers were changing out valves on a compressor when the explosion occurred,” Sharpe said.Nexen released a statement saying there is no immediate danger to neighbouring communities or personnel on site.
